Monday morning Wouter van der Ham and I met up at first light on a hill in ‘De Haagse Waterleidingduinen’. Mist covered the dunes around us like a thin blanket and Woodlarks (Boomleeuwerik) sang their beautiful morning chorus all around us. Migration has finally begun again and todays’ wind still conditions mend there was a good chance that we would actually see the first spring migrants heading north!
As expected there was no real fireworks yet, but 3 Pied Wagtails (Rouwkwikstaart) among a total of 27 White Wagtails (Witte kwikstaart) was certainly not bad at all! In total we counted no less than 63 species in 2 hours of which a fair number was actually migrating north.
Best however were those singing Woodlarks. Turn up the volume to experience what we experienced from just 10 feet away at the crack of dawn!
